The Sheffield Institute of Corporate and Commercial Law (SICCL) is a research institute within the School of Law at the University of Sheffield. The School of Law was ranked in the top 10 in the UK for the quality of its research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. SICCL brings together researchers from different countries and with a variety of expertise in in many aspects of corporate and commercial law, including corporate governance; corporate social responsibility; aspects of intellectual property including trade marks and copyright; finance and banking; theories of money; law and economics; regulation; relational contract; e-commerce; commercial property and internet privacy. SICCL members have expertise in the law of the UK, other member states of the EU, the EU itself and China. As a community of researchers, SICCL prides itself on its critical and interdisciplinary approach to its subject-matter, and its members combine practical and theoretical insight wherever possible in their research. SICCL members are particularly interested in using heterodox and institutional economics to critique existing laws and regulatory schemes, and as the basis for reform proposals. SICCL members have recently presented reform proposals before the European and Australian Parliaments, and SICCL is hosting a series of groundbreaking conferences on the relationship between law and money. SICCL’s expertise in this area allows it to explore the impact of financial instability on the decision-making of key economic actors. More broadly, SICCL’s contribution to this project will explore law and regulation in its social and economic context, and offer an assessment of their effects on the governance of corporations and institutional investors, as well as on consumer behaviour.
