Fafo Research Foundation

The Fafo Research Foundation is an important participant in the SMART project because Fafo’s core research competence consists of applied research and evidence-based policy development in core areas of the policy coherence for development (PCD) agenda. These include extensive experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods in developing countries, sustainability benchmarking for emerging economies, and policy oriented research in the areas of labour and responsible business. Forskningstiftelsen Fafo (est. 1982) is an independent research foundation which conducts applied social research in Norway and abroad, and in partnership with institutions around in the world. Fafo research is financed from scientific and commissioned sources, both in Norway and internationally. Fafo has a total of 95 employees, of whom 81 are scientific staff and Fafo is governed by a board of representatives from Norwegian business and labour. Fafo researchers have worked on a wide range of issues in the field of social and economic development in a range of countries and with a diverse network of partners, as well as on issues of social policy at home in Norway. In recent years, Fafo research on different aspects of sustainable development has contributed to policy formulation at the United Nations, World Bank and OECD and has addressed themes such as youth employment in developing countries or the role of sustainable job creation in global value chains. Fafo has contributed to evidence-based policy making for sustainable development in specific countries, such as China and in response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Fafo is one of the leading research institutes in the Nordic region on issues related to work and employment in Europe and business and human rights globally. Fafo offices are located in Oslo and Bejing.
